1. Helping learners develop a growth mindset
For me, helping my students develop a growth mindset is not about telling them to try harder or simply believe in themselves. After going through this course, I no longer see mindset as something that exists only inside the student. What I’ve learned from Dweck, and especially from Thomas and Brown and the concept of a significant learning environment, is that growth does not happen just because a student decides to improve; it happens when I design the conditions that allow that growth to occur.
In my work with Clock-Skewed Learners, I’ve realized that when students struggle, it is not because they lack effort. It is because something is not aligned with their time, their structure, their expectations, or even their internal state. For that reason, I don’t focus on pushing for effort; I focus on designing alignment. Using UbD has helped me think backward not just about what I want my students to learn but also about what kind of environment I need to create so that learning can actually happen. At the same time, Fink’s model pushed me to go deeper and think about significant learning—not just content delivery—but how my students connect ideas, reflect on their thinking, and learn how to learn.
My BHAG reflects this shift. I want to build a system where my students learn how to regulate themselves, reflect on their learning, and realign when learning breaks. So instead of telling them to “have a growth mindset,” I create structures where growth becomes visible and real. I use reflection journals, e-portfolios, consistent routines, and ongoing feedback so my students can see their progress and begin to understand how they learn.
This is where I see the connection to Harapnuik’s idea of a learner's mindset. Ultimately, a growth mindset is simply the starting point. What I really want is for my students to take ownership of their learning. I want them to understand how they focus, how they lose alignment, and how they can bring themselves back. That shift doesn’t happen through words; it happens through design, structure, and meaningful learning experiences that I intentionally create.

2. Modeling “Yet” as a teacher
For me, modeling a growth mindset and especially the idea of “yet” goes far beyond just the language I use. It’s about how I position myself inside the learning environment. After working through this course, I no longer see myself as someone who delivers content but as someone who designs conditions for learning, as Thomas and Brown describe. That means I also have to model what it looks like to be in the process of learning.
When something does not work as planned in my classroom, I do not hide it or hastily move on. I pause and analyze it, sometimes with my students. This is where UbD has influenced me. I constantly go back to my goals, my assessments, and my design, asking myself if what I created is actually aligned with how my students learn. At the same time, Fink’s idea of significant learning reminds me that reflection is part of the learning process, not something extra. So, when I say, "You don’t understand this yet,” I also show them what “yet” looks like in action—adjusting, rethinking, and trying again with intention.
This connects directly to my BHAG, because I want my students to develop self-regulation and awareness, not dependency. By modeling my own process — my mistakes, my adjustments, my thinking — I create a space where students feel safe to do the same. That’s also where I see the shift toward Harapnuik’s learner's mindset. “Yet” is not just a word; it becomes a habit of thinking, where both my students and I understand that learning is continuous and that alignment, not perfection, is what moves us forward.


3. Feedback, cheating, and honesty in learning
For me, one of the biggest shifts I’ve seen when applying a growth mindset within a significant learning environment is how students begin to relate to feedback. Before, feedback felt like judgment — something final, something tied to grades. But as I started redesigning my learning environment using UbD and thinking more intentionally about alignment, feedback became part of the process, not the end of it.
Through Fink’s model, I began to see that learning is not just about content but also about reflection, connection, and learning how to learn. So, I intentionally built systems like e-portfolios, reflection journals, and continuous check-ins where students engage with feedback regularly. This aligns with Thomas and Brown’s idea that learning happens through interaction and participation, not passive reception. Feedback becomes a conversation, not a correction.
This shift also changes how I see cheating. When students focus only on grades, they see cheating as a shortcut to survive the system. But when I shift the focus toward growth, reflection, and self-awareness, cheating loses its purpose. There is nothing to prove, only something to understand. My BHAG is centered on helping students become self-regulated learners, and that means they need to see their learning honestly, not perform it artificially.
This is also where I see the transition toward Harapnuik’s learner's mindset. When students begin to value the process over the result, they start taking ownership. They don’t avoid feedback; they seek it. And in that moment, learning becomes real, because it is no longer about external validation or approval but about internal understanding.


4. Grades, pressure, and the role of grit
For me, one of the biggest challenges in education is how much students are conditioned to focus on grades instead of learning. Before this course, I saw it as a student issue. Now I see it as a design issue. When the system rewards performance, comparison, and final results, students naturally become obsessed with grades.
Through UbD, I started thinking more intentionally about alignment — what I say I value versus what I actually measure. At the same time, Fink’s model pushed me to think beyond content and consider how students care, connect, and develop as learners. If I want students to focus on growth, I have to design experiences where growth is visible and meaningful, not just graded.
This is where growth mindset helps, but only when it is supported by structure. If I tell students to focus on improvement but still evaluate them only through grades, I create confusion. That’s why in my approach, I emphasize reflection, process, and self-regulation. Students track their progress through portfolios and begin to see learning as something continuous, not something that ends with a score.
Grit also plays an important role here, but I’ve learned to see it differently. Persistence matters, but pushing students to persist in a system that is not aligned with how they learn can actually create frustration and disengagement. Thomas and Brown remind me that learning is about participation and adaptation, not just endurance. So instead of asking students to just “push through,” I guide them to understand when they need to adjust, rethink, or realign.
This connects directly to my BHAG, because I want students to develop awareness of their learning process, not just the ability to perform under pressure. And this is where I see the movement toward Harapnuik’s Learner’s Mindset. When students stop chasing grades and start understanding themselves as learners, they shift from external pressure to internal ownership.


5. When growth mindset becomes just a trend (Fully Integrated – Your Voice)
For me, one of the most significant risks with a growth mindset is when it becomes a slogan instead of a practice. I’ve seen how easy it is to tell students, “Just try harder” or “you can do it,” without actually changing anything in the learning environment. After going through this course, I understand why critiques like Alfie Kohn’s are important. If we focus only on student attitude, we ignore everything else that shapes learning.
What I’ve learned through Thomas and Brown is that learning does not happen in isolation; it happens through participation in an environment. So, if the environment is not aligned, no mindset will remedy that. This is where I began to see the growth mindset in a different way. It’s not something I can just “give” to students. It has to be embedded in how I design the experience.
UbD helped me reflect on whether my goals, assessments, and activities are actually aligned. Fink pushed me to consider whether the learning is meaningful, connected, and reflective. If those pieces are missing, then asking students to have a growth mindset becomes almost unfair, because the system itself is not supporting growth. I also see this issue with grit. People sometimes use grit to justify pushing students harder without thinking about whether the environment is truly supportive of them. But real rigor is not about increasing pressure; it's about creating meaningful challenges that students can engage with and learn from. That’s why I focus on designing structure, routines, and reflection into my classroom, so growth is supported, not demanded.
This connects directly to my BHAG, because my goal is not to convince students to think differently but to create a system where they experience learning differently. And this is where I see the shift toward Harapnuik's learner's mindset. When the environment is designed well, students don’t just hear about growth; they experience it. And that’s when it stops being a trend and becomes part of how they learn.


6. Is growth mindset enough?
For me, growth mindset is a starting point, but it is not enough on its own. Before this course, I might have believed that helping students think differently would be enough to improve learning. Now I see that belief alone cannot sustain learning if the environment is not designed to support it.
Research shows that mindset alone has a limited impact, and that makes sense to me when I look at my experience with students. If the structure is unclear, expectations are misaligned, or students lack the tools to reflect and adjust, then telling them to “have a growth mindset” does very little. That’s why UbD has been so important for me; it forces me to consider alignment between goals, assessments, and learning experiences. At the same time, Fink reminds me that learning has to be meaningful, connected, and reflective to truly impact students.
Thomas and Brown’s idea of a significant learning environment helped me understand that learning is not something I deliver; it's something that emerges when students are actively engaged in a well-designed system. This connects directly to my BHAG, because my goal is not just to change how students think but to create conditions where they can regulate themselves, reflect, and realign when learning breaks.
That’s also where I see the transition to Harapnuik's learner's mindset. A growth mindset may create opportunities, but it is the learning environment that determines whether students actually take advantage of them. Without design, structure, and meaningful experiences, mindset stays theoretical. With them, it becomes something students can genuinely experience and internalize.


7. Moving toward a Learner’s Mindset
For me, the real goal is not just helping students develop a growth mindset; it is helping them move into what Harapnuik describes as a learner's mindset. After everything I’ve learned in this course, I see that a growth mindset is only the beginning. It focuses on belief, but a learner's mindset goes further; it focuses on ownership, awareness, and the ability to manage one’s own learning.
Through my work and my innovation plan, I’ve come to understand that students need more than encouragement. They need structure, reflection, and opportunities to understand how they learn. That’s why I integrate tools like e-portfolios, reflection prompts, and consistent routines. These are not just activities; they are part of a system that helps students see their thinking, track their progress, and recognize when they are out of alignment.
Thomas and Brown helped me see learning as participation within an environment, not just individual effort. UbD helped me design that environment with intention, and Fink pushed me to consider deeper, more significant learning, especially learning how to learn. All of these ideas connect directly to my BHAG, because my goal is to create a space where students can regulate themselves, reflect on their learning, and reconnect when things break.
This environment is where the shift happens. Students stop waiting for instructions and start taking responsibility. They stop focusing only on grades and begin to understand their process. They recognize when they lose focus, when they need to adjust, and how to move forward. That is when learning becomes something internal, not something imposed.
For me, that is the difference between a student and a learner. And that is the purpose of creating a significant learning environment—not just to teach content, but to help students become aware, capable, and independent in their learning journey.
CONCLUSION – BEYOND THE COURSE
Beyond the Course: Extended Applications
While this project focused on applying Fink’s model and structured learning environments within the classroom, the analysis of student behavior and intervention outcomes suggests broader possibilities for future development.
The integration of real-time behavioral intervention, student voice, role-based participation, and longitudinal data tracking indicates that learning can be understood as a dynamic process involving cognition, emotion, behavior, and environment. Rather than viewing disruptive behavior as something to eliminate, this approach reinterprets it as meaningful data that can guide instructional decisions.
Immediate teacher interventions, when aligned with the function of student behavior, can produce measurable changes. Over time, these changes evolve into more stable patterns of engagement, participation, and self-regulation. This process demonstrates that learning is not only cognitive but also deeply connected to emotional and environmental factors.
This extended framework could be applied beyond the traditional classroom context. It has potential applications in substitute teaching systems, parent-teacher communication, and culturally diverse learning environments. Additionally, it opens opportunities for developing structured tools to document behavioral shifts, track progress over time, and align perception with measurable evidence.
Future research may explore how integrating behavioral data, emotional regulation strategies, and environmental factors—such as classroom structure, social connection, and physical conditions like nutrition and space—can further enhance learning outcomes.

Ultimately, this work suggests that learning is not a fixed event, but a continuous process of alignment between the student, the teacher, and the environment.
Factors That Influence Growth Mindset
If educators truly want to influence students' mindset, several other factors must also be considered. These include emotional support, meaningful relationships, relevant curriculum, learner voice and choice, access to resources, and the overall learning culture. Students are more likely to persist when they feel valued, capable, and connected to the learning process.

My innovation plan is deeply influenced by the concept of significant learning environments. Innovation in education is not simply about using technology; it is about transforming the learning experience. By focusing on learner-centered environments, authentic learning opportunities, and student ownership, I can create more meaningful and lasting educational experiences.
The Growth Mindset Plan supports my innovation plan by encouraging persistence, resilience, reflection, and continuous improvement. Combined with Understanding by Design, learner agency, and authentic learning strategies, this approach helps create an environment where students are motivated to learn for understanding rather than simply for grades.
